Wolves 0-1 Arsenal – Premier League: Live score, team news and updates as Leandro Trossard gives Gunners the lead in must-win clash

Wolves 0-1 Arsenal

More neat play in the area from Arsenal that comes to nothing and rolls out for a goal kick. It’s been the story of the game.

Alan Smith has called for Saka to get a rest. I feel changes will not be too far away.

Wolves protest as Chirewa goes down under pressure from Saliba. Nothing given.

Wolves 0-1 Arsenal

Odegaard whips in the free kick and it’s cleared.

I feel like Wolves would have had a really good chance had Cunha, Hwang, Ait Nouri, Neto, etc. been fully fit.

Jesus is the latest man fouled. They go short this time, but cannot work a clear opening. Odegaard shoots well wide.

Wolves 0-1 Arsenal

Wolves are yet to get going this half. Their lack of bodies may be starting to catch up with them.

Lemina is penalised when he jumps with Kiwior. A fair decision, a bit of an elbow in the neck.

Wolves 0-1 Arsenal

Chirewa is now up front of his own for Wolves in what is his first Premier League start. It’s a big ask.

Trossard does well to win Arsenal a corner. It’s short and good build-up, but Odegaard’s effort is blocked.

Saka is brought down by Traore on the edge of the box. Rice will take this one I think…

He does – it hits the on-rushing wall.

White hooks it back in and Havertz shoots but it’s straight at Sa.

Wolves 0-1 Arsenal

A really good ball from Saka finds White and his cross hangs above both Jesus and Trossard. The latter goes down. He potentially wants a penalty? Not really sure, but he goes down.

Space then opens up for Odegaard, but there’s an immense block in there from I think Kilman.

Wolves are going to make an early change, with Hwang making way for Lemina.

Before he makes his exit, he picks up a yelllow card for a lunge on Kiwior.

Second half underway! – Wolves 0-1 Arsenal

We are back underway for the second half.

Gunning for more

The Sky pundits want more from Arsenal this half.

I felt like it was the same pattern as Villa. All the chances but not clinical enough. Maybe a little bit of luck, it was a little bit Sunday League-ish.

Those are the words of Theo Walcott.

HALF TIME – Wolves 0-1 Arsenal

Three minutes of added time comes and goes, the PA announcer drowned out by the ecstatic away fans.

Saka won the ball back for Arsenal on the right just before the whistle and fed Trossard, but nothing came of the attack and Wolves picked up a goal kick to take us to the break.

The current league leaders are ahead at the break.

Trossard fires Arsenal ahead – Wolves 0-1 Arsenal

It’s not necessarily deserved, but Arsenal are currently heading back to the top of the Premier League.

An aerial ball finds its way to Jesus, who outmuscles Doherty. Wolves think the Irishman is fouled, but not chance. He feeds Trossard, and it’s a bit of a slice, but it flies into the top corner, and that’s Trossard’s ninth league goal of the season.

GOAL! Wolves 0-1 Arsenal

Frustration is audible from Arsenal fans as Trossard loses his footing and gives the ball away.

Hugo Bueno finds himself one-on-one with White and his cross has Raya scrambling but it’s headed away by Gabriel.

A nice ball up the other end to Saka, but his pull black finds an orange shirt. Maybe it’s gold. Either way…

Wolves 0-0 Arsenal

A break in play while Havertz gets treatment but he is fine to carry on. Saliba thengives the ball away and Havertz shoots from an interesting angle and it’s well wide.

Arsenal then come forward and Trossard’s outside-of-the-boot pass is gathered by Sa.

Not been a game of the highest quality so far.

‘He must have thought he had scored’

Kiwior made a mess of it and Gomes is onto it with a flash. That is a top save – Gomes cannot believe the ‘keeper has got a hand on it. It was his only option and he must have thought he had scored.

That’s Alan Smith on Sky, speaking on Gomes hitting the post. Raya did really well.

A nasty challenge on Havertz – Wolves 0-0 Arsenal

Saka has another run at Toti but the defender gets the better of the winger.

Another yellow, for Declan Rice. He is not happy that play was not stopped when Havertz hit the deck after a clash with Kilman – who is booked for the tackle.

High, actually. Very close to a red I would imagine.

Wolves 0-0 Arsenal

Another yellow card, this time for Toti. He is persistent with his holding of Saka as Tierney tries to play advantage and goes into the book.

Arsenal’s turn to whip in a free kick, similar area. Odegaard to take… away by former Tottenham man Matt Doherty.

Off the post! – Wolves 0-0 Arsenal

Wolves come forward once again and Gomes is central to it once again.

The ball is bouncing down the right and Gomes is all over Kiwior. He runs towards goal, shoots, and Raya manages to get a fingertip on it to take it onto the inside of the post.

By far the closest we have come to an opener.

Wolves 0-0 Arsenal

We have our first booking of the afternoon, and it goes to Trossard, much to the joy of the home fans.

Gomes chases a flick-on and gets in behind the Belgian. He takes a whack in the face that the referee doesn’t see, and let’s his frustrations get the better of him by taking out the Brazilian.

The free kick is swung in by Doyle but comes to nothing.

Arsenal go close – Wolves 0-0 Arsenal

Oh, Arsenal should score!

Toti makes a right mess of a ball forward and Saka appears to be in, ball at his left foot in the box and time. He just cannot get the ball under control, though. Odegaard can’t on the follow up either.

White then puts a low ball in and Trossard kicks air. The best two opportunites of the game but far.

Wolves 0-0 Arsenal

Some decent play from Wolves in the last few minutes, though they have created nothing.

Chirewa takes a punt but a deflection from Rice takes any power it did have out of it and Sa gathers.

Arsenal are very much playing without the ball right now.

Wolves 0-0 Arsenal

Wolves come forward for the first time but the attack dies out with Hwang trying to hook the ball towards goal, but Raya gathering easily.

Kiwior then gets forward down the left for Arsenal and Trossard finds Rice. Edge of the box, should score, but it’s wide again.

This is not the clinical Arsenal we have become accustomed to.

‘No killer edge yet’

Joe Bernstein, Mail Sport, at Molineux:

Wolves will be happy to have reached 15 minutes with their goal intact. They are sitting back and Jose Sa has made three saves already, but all of them fairly comfortable. Arsenal are getting into the final third with relative ease but no killer edge yet.

Wolves 0-0 Arsenal

Ben White is down in the Arsenal half for quite a while but Arsenal choose to play on. The period of play ends with Rice shooting straight at Sa.

White is fine. Odegaard with Arsenal’s latest effort – the worst of the lot so far. Closer to the corner flag.

Wolves 0-0 Arsenal

Martin Odegaard takes a whack but Tierney tells him to carry on.

Wolves are keen to play when they get the ball. Arsenal’s press is measured rather than constant. They must be at least a little bit knackered.

Leandro Trossard is public enemy No 1 today, it seems. Wolves fans jeer as he gives away a free kick just inside his own half.

A famous face

Wolves 0-0 Arsenal

I can repeat this chant. ‘Champions League, you’re having a laugh.’

The game is settling a bit now with Arsenal enjoying a solid period of possession. Wolves happy to slow it down.

Saka is the latest man to force a save out of Sa, but, again, his effort is tame.

Wolves 0-0 Arsenal

Wolves try and play out but Arsenal win the ball up the pitch. It finds itself at Jesus’ feet, but the forward drags an effort even tamer than Havertz’s wide of the post.

Tommy Doyle, by the way, is on loan from Manchester City. He could lend a hand…

Alan Smith has just suggested on Sky commentary that people may lose respect for Arsenal if they stumble again here.

Wolves 0-0 Arsenal

Some interesting chants from the home fans towards Arsenal on the back of their Champions League exit in midweek. I cannot repeat them.

An early chance for Kai Havertz, but his tame, hooked effort is gathered by Sa.

KICK OFF – Wolves 0-0 Arsenal

Referee Paul Tierney blows his whistle for the first time today.

Here come the teams!

The players are on their ways out at Molineux.

‘We want to take points’

Gary O’Neil is aiming high.

It may seem weird to say that – it’s two good teams playing a game of Premier League football – but they are up against it tonight.

Have our full faith and backing. I wouldn’t put them in this position if I didn’t feel they were capable of producing. So, the aim is to take points from the game as always and give a real good account of ourselves. Can we make sure we always look like us? We’ve had really high standards this year.

Wolves have been good against the top teams this season. We’ll see if they can produce again.

Worries for Wolves

While we are on stats, I must credit a member of the desk who has been on work experience for this one…

Arsenal have scored in their last 32 meetings with Wolves, their joint-longest scoring streak against any opponent.

They will be looking to hit a new record today, I suppose. But that is some streak, and I can’t really see it ending, if I’m honest.

Gunners’ rigid defence

One of the players I thought may be rested today was Gabriel, who had been struggling with a knock.

Nonetheless, he starts, and will help form an away defence that has been far and away the best in the league this season.

26 goals conceded in 32 games for Arsenal, five better than any other side.

David Raya has kept 12 clean sheets in 26 games since taking the No 1 spot – the most in the league – with Aaron Ramsdale keeping a further two.

Clean sheets in their last five Premier League away games, too.

Arsenal’s April curse

Those with better memories than most will notice that Arsenal have stuttered in April once again.

It’s now three years in-a-row that the Gunners have slipped up in the back end of the campaign. Two wins from five so far this month.

Why? There are a few answers. And my colleague Sami Mokbel has outlined them below.

If you are a Mail+ subscriber – if not, why not?! – then click below to read the piece.

Arsenal swap three

Mikel Arteta has made three changes from the defeat to Bayern Munich.

Tomiyasu, Jorginho and Martinelli drop out. Kiwior, Trossard and Jesus come in.

I thought they may change a few more for this one. I guess not!

Four Wolves changes

I make it four changes for Wolves from the draw with Forest.

Semedo, Lemina, Sarabia and Cunha drop out. Hugo Bueno, Traore, Chirewa and Hwang come into the side.

Ait Nouri is fit enough only for the bench – sorry Fantasy Premeir League players. 15-year-old Wes Okoduwa is also on the bench, and will become Wolves’ youngest-ever player if he is introduced.

BREAKING: Arsenal team to play Wolves

Raya, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Kiwior, Rice, Odegaard, Havertz, Saka, Trossard, Jesus.

Subs: Ramsdale, Zinchenko, Jorginho, Partey, Vieira, Smith Rowe, Nelson, Martinelli, Nketiah.

Sa, Doherty, S Bueno, Kilman, Toti, H Bueno, Gomes, Traore, Doyle, Chirewa, Hwang.

Subs: Bentley, Ait Nouri, M Lemina, Sarabia, Holman, Barnett, Ojinnaka, Okoduwa, Fraser.

‘Wolves have nothing to lose’

It is difficult. O’Neil has had an excelelnt season bvut everyone is dependant on their players. But it makes them dangerous, it could almost be a free hit, young lads trying to make it and have the games of their lives. Nothing to lose.

Those are the words of former Arsenal forward Alan Smith, speaking on Sky Sports right now. He has a point, to be fair…

Team news is a matter of moments away.

Sky Sports presenter Alan Smith

Wolves struggling

And Wolves aren’t just struggling off-the-pitch, but on it too.

Winless in their last five games in a ll competitions since beating Fulham at the start of March, any hopes of Europe have likely drifted, though it is still a season to be proud of given what happened with O’Neil’s appointment at the start of the season.

Last time out, a Matheus Cunha brace helped them to a draw with Nottingham Forest. He is one of the players that will miss tonight through injury, however…

Wolves’ injury crisis

So, that injury crisis…

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil opened up on the difficulties in his squad ahead of this evening’s game, with the Englishman down to the absolute bare bones.

Craig Dawson, Nelson Semedo, Matheus Cunha, Pedro Neto and Jean-Ricard Bellegarde are all out, Hwang Hee-chan and Rayan Ait-Nouri aren’t fit enough to start and Mario Lemina and Pablo Sarabia are nursing knocks.

One was pleased he got to miss his science lesson this morning so he could train with us.

That was what he said of one of the players, 15 year-old schoolboy Wes Okoduwa, who could be included in the squad tonight.

Arsenal looking to bounce back

The season does, admittedly, have a risk of dying out for Arsenal on the back of the last week.

They suffered that staggering defeat at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League last week, and were second best to Bayern in their Champions League quarter-final.

Today is, to be honest, do or die. There is quite a lot on their side – Wolves’ injuries, etc etc – however that does include expectation.

How the title race looks

So after a truly mental game week in the Premier League last weekend, the title is once again in the hands of defending champions Manchester City, who are looking to become the first team ever to win the Premier League four times in a row.

Pep Guardiola’s side lead both Liverpool and the Gunners by two points, with each team having six games left to play. This is Arsenal’s first of those six.

It is still techincally a long way from over, but City are usually relentless and this stage and, once they catch you, it’s hard to do the same to them.

Still, Arsenal can go back top today, which will apply a form of pressure.

Hello!

Good evening one and all and welcome to Mail Sport’s live coverage of the Premier League game between Wolves and Arsenal this evening.

Some say the title race is done. I think we will go a long way to finding out if that’s true this evening.
