Guterres announces his acceptance of the recommendations of the report of the independent review of the work of the agency "UNRWA"

New York, April 22 / WAM / The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, announced his acceptance of the recommendations presented by Ms. Catherine Colonna, Head of the Independent Review Group of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), through her final report submitted to the Secretariat, entitled “An independent review of mechanisms and procedures to ensure UNRWA’s commitment to the principle of humanitarian neutrality.”
A statement distributed by Stephane Dujarric, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, indicated that Guterres accepted the recommendations contained in Ms. Colonna’s report, and also agreed with Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini that UNRWA, with his support, will develop an action plan to implement the recommendations contained in the final report.
The statement stressed that, in this regard, the Secretary-General is counting on the cooperation of the donor community, host countries and employees to fully cooperate in implementing the recommendations, and appealed to all stakeholders to provide effective support to UNRWA, as it is the lifeline for Palestine refugees in the region.
It is noteworthy that the Secretary-General of the United Nations had decided on February 5 to conduct an independent review of UNRWA’s work, led by Catherine Colonna and with the participation of three research organizations: the Raoul Wallenberg Institute in Sweden, the Michelsen Institute in Norway, and the Danish Institute for Human Rights, so that the review includes the process of assessing whether UNRWA was doing everything it could to ensure its neutrality.
