Pies, Bombers call for rule change after Anzac draw

29 years after the very first draw in the very first Anzac Day match between Essendon and Collingwood, history has repeated itself.

After a heartbreaking miss from Bomber Kyle Langford with just two minutes to spare in the final term, followed by Pie Jamie Elliott’s crucial dropped mark seconds later, the game resulted in an 85-85 draw.

On top of those two crucial misses, a slip from Essendon’s Nick Hind, allowed Magpie Beau McCreery to boot a goal to edge the reigning premiers in front in the final term

Back in 1995, the sides finished the inaugural Anzac Day match at 111-a-piece.

There is no extra time in home-and-away matches, only finals and the grand final. Each side receives two of a possible four points for the draw.

However, veteran Magpie Scott Pendlebury has suggested it’s time to rid the bye during the season too.

“Extra time?,” Pendlebury asked on 7 post-match.

“Everyone had their chances. Obviously, we got a little bit lucky there with them (Langford) kicking a point there.”
