Advance:

  • Aaron Sorkin is writing a script about the dangerous influence of Facebook.
  • It was inspired by the January 6 incident.
  • The project is still in an early stage.

Given that Aaron Sorkin won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for turning Ben Mezrich’s book ‘The Accidental Billionaires’ into the story of the birth of Facebook and its complicated and controversial early days, it seems natural that he would be the person to tackle a story about its power. and influence in the current era.

And from the looks of it, that’s precisely what the creator of the television classic ‘The West Wing’ is working on now, although independently of any studio assignments. And it seems he is very suspicious of the motives and impact of the siege.

“You can’t reach 500 million friends without making some enemies.”

speaking for a live edition of ‘The Town’ PodcastSorkin announced that his concern about how the Facebook system has poisoned politics on a personal and national level led him to start working on a new script, which, although not a direct sequel to ‘The Social Network’, would continue the discreet fears that were subtextual in the original.

Here’s what Sorkin told hosts Matthew Belloni and Peter Hamby:

“Look, yes, I will write about this. I blame Facebook for January 6th. Facebook has been, among other things, adjusting its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible. Because that’s what will increase engagement. That’s what will lead you to – what they call within the halls of Facebook – ‘the infinite scroll’… There is supposed to be a constant tension on Facebook between growth and integrity. There isn’t. There is only growth. If Mark Zuckerberg woke up tomorrow morning and realized that there’s nothing you can buy for $120 billion that can’t be bought for $119 billion, ‘So how about I make a little less than money? I will fine-tune integrity and reduce growth.” Yes, you can do it by changing a one to a zero.”

Oh, and when asked what exactly he’d focus on, he told the audience they’d have to buy a movie ticket to find out.

Who could lead a follow-up of the ‘Social Network’?

David Fincher, of course, directed ‘The Social Network’ to great acclaim, and Sorkin has said in the past that any future projects associated with Facebook would be one he would only consider if the ‘Se7en’ and ‘Fight Club’ filmmaker was involved.

This is what he said to ‘Happy Sad Confused‘podcast in 2020:

“People have been talking to me about [a sequel] because what we have discovered is the dark side of Facebook. Do I want to write that movie? Yes, I do. I will only write it if [David Fincher] directs it. If Billy Wilder came back from the grave and said he wanted to direct it, he would say he would only do it with David.”

However, in recent years, Sorkin himself has stepped forward to direct his scripts, with films such as ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ and ‘Being the Ricardos’.

Right now, this exists only as a Sorkin script in progress, so we’ll see if he gets to the point where he wants to put it out there and attract some interest.
