The European Union condemns violence and threats against journalists for practicing their profession

Brussels, 2nd May / WAM / The High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell, affirmed the condemnation of all acts of violence, including threats, against journalists for practicing their profession, whether committed by states, organized groups or individuals, and said that there must be no impunity for these crimes. Crimes, regardless of where they were committed.

He added that journalists and media workers courageously exercise their freedom of expression every day and are often exposed to great risks.

He explained in a statement, on behalf of member states on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, that in 2024 the work of journalists has become more important than ever, adding that on this World Press Freedom Day, we honor their work and courage.

He stressed the need to protect journalists and media workers who cover armed conflicts in accordance with international humanitarian law, expressing the European Union’s regret at the huge increase in the number of journalists killed or injured while covering the devastating consequences of war.
