Constant Headaches? The Culprit Could Be Your Jaw!

Cairo: Zizi Abdel Ghaffar

Headaches, clicks, and tenderness when moving the jaw may be signs of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, stated Tatiana Sumtsova, Head of Dentistry Department at the Staromin Regional Hospital.

“The temporomandibular joint is one of the most complex joints in our body, facilitating lower jaw movement. Disturbances in its function can cause a range of unpleasant symptoms, and without treatment, they can significantly impair the patient’s quality of life,” explained Sumtsova.

Symptoms of TMJ disorders can vary from mild discomfort to severe pain and restricted movements. These include jaw joint pain, which may radiate to the ear, neck, or shoulders, facial muscle fatigue, and swelling in the joint area.

“TMJ disorders can arise from multiple causes, including improper bite or other dental issues, arthritis, joint wear and tear, jaw injuries, and prolonged facial muscle tension often associated with stress. Each case of TMJ disorder is unique, and the treatment approach should be individualized. For instance, if stress is the cause of discomfort, consultation with a psychologist and learning relaxation techniques such as meditation or deep breathing may be necessary. In cases where TMJ issues are due to an improper bite, consultation with an orthodontist may be recommended,” added the specialist.

Without treatment or incomplete application, painful symptoms may become less intense and progress to chronic, hidden pain. Over time, due to functional overload, the joint will begin to partially or completely lose its functions, and in this case, the likelihood of restoring movement in it is very low.
