Cyndi Lauper Doc ‘Let The Canary Sing’ Sets Paramount+ Premiere; Drops Trailer

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount+ has acquired the Cyndi Lauper documentary Let the Canary Sing and has set the premiere date for June 4 in the U.S. and Canada; the UK, Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria can watch a day later.

Additionally, a companion album of the same name will be released by Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment. Tracks include many of her songs from her days in Blue Angel to her breakout single “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” to “True Colors” and “I Drove All Night,” to name a few.

Directed by Emmy Award-winning documentarian Alison Ellwood, Let the Canary Sing “chronicles Lauper’s meteoric ascent to stardom and her profound impact on generations through her music, ever-evolving punk style, unwavering feminism and tireless advocacy. The documentary takes the audience on an engaging exploration of a renowned and pioneering artist who has left a remarkable legacy with her art,” a release from the streamer shares.

Ellwood’s credits include the two-part documentary Laurel Canyonabout the music scene that flourished in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood in the 1960s, and The Go-Go’sabout the all-female pop band that were contemporaries of Lauper.

“Over the years I’ve been asked to do a documentary about my life and work, but it never felt like the right time. Until now,” shared Lauper. “When I first met Alison Ellwood, I knew right away I could trust her to tell my story honestly, which was incredibly important to me, and she succeeded in that. I’d like to thank Alison, the producers and all of the amazing documentary participants who agreed to be interviewed.”

The title stems from a lawsuit Lauper faced more than 40 years ago after she went solo following her time with Blue Angel. The judge who resolved the case said of Lauper, “Let the canary sing.”

The documentary is produced by Fine Point Films (The Go-Go’s, No Stone Unturned) with Trevor Birney, Eimhear O’Neill, Andrew Tully and Alison Ellwood. Executive producers also include Lisa Barbaris and Gregory P. Cimino II, Esq; Tom Mackay, Richard Story and Rebecca Teitel for Sony Music Entertainment; Sophia Dilley and Wesley Adams for Concord Originals. Sony Music Vision is the distributor.

Lauper also appears in the new documentary The Greatest Night in Popnow streaming on Netflix, about the making of the landmark charity single “We Are the World.” She is joined in the film by Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warwick, Huey Lewis, Smokey Robinson, and others recalling the night in January 1985 when they recorded one of pop music’s most celebrated songs.
