Paris 2024: the program of activities in Marseille for the arrival of Belem and the Olympic flame in France
The Olympic flame will set foot on French soil. Two and a half months before the Paris 2024 Games, Marseille will be the first city to host it, Wednesday May 8. THE Belem, the ship which recovered the flame in Greece, will dock in the Old Port and the first torchbearer on French soil, Florent Manaudou, will be responsible for lighting the Olympic cauldron. THE Belem will appear off the coast of Marseille in the northern harbor around 11 a.m. He will then begin a route which will see him follow the coast of Marseille towards the south, to Maïre Island. It will then go up, a little further offshore, to the Frioul Islands. It will make a second tour in the northern harbor, before mooring in the Old Port at the end of the day. Throughout the day, many activities are planned in the Old Port. The city of Marseille announces exhibitions, a fresco, musical entertainment, but also sports demonstrations. Three breakdance “crews” (teams in French) will be present from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will also be a handibasket demonstration (from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.). Finally, a fifteen-minute freestyle football number will be given on the square in front of City Hall from 3:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
At sea, a parade has been prepared. In addition to the Beleman entire fleet plans to pass “closest to the coast”. After several hours of parade, the Belem will anchor in the Old Port at 7 p.m. A welcome ceremony “spectacular and unprecedented” will then begin. The Marseille Philharmonic Orchestra “will greet the entry of the Olympic flame” In France. He will perform Beethoven’s 5th symphony. Giant screens will broadcast the ceremony live. Spectators will then enjoy a show by the French patrol who have prepared an Olympic number for the occasion.
