"UNICEF" It calls for a ceasefire and not to launch an attack on Rafah

Geneva, May 7 / WAM / The United Nations Children’s and Motherhood Fund (UNICEF) and humanitarian agencies called for a ceasefire and not to launch an attack on Rafah, according to what was announced.

James Durr, spokesman for the organization, during a press conference held today in Geneva.

The spokesman said that the nightmare of the residents of Gaza has become a reality, noting that Rafah can be called the Children’s City, where more than half of the children in the Gaza Strip live. He added, “There is a need for a ceasefire now.”

He warned that the military attack on the city, which is the entry point for most aid, would greatly complicate the process of delivering aid, and that if the Rafah Gate was closed for a long period, it would be difficult to know how famine in Gaza could be avoided.

The UNICEF spokesman said that hundreds of thousands of children in Rafah suffer from a disability, medical condition or weakness, which puts them at greater risk and makes it difficult for them to move to another place even if there is a place to go.

He stressed that what is happening must change and that this is the last opportunity for change in terms of the flow of aid and the release of hostages. He noted that UNICEF has called countless times not to kill children and is doing so again for the sake of the children of Rafah.

He added that if safety was defined according to international humanitarian law – as freedom from bombing as well as access to potable water, adequate food, shelter and medicine – there would be no safe place in the Gaza Strip to go.

He pointed out that Rafah has approximately one toilet for every 850 people, but as for showering, the situation is four times worse, as there is one shower for every 3,500 people.
