Calls in Japan for action to reduce the risk of fires during the expected major earthquake

Secretary Miyoko Miyachi’s book “Defending the Capital” warns that the danger of earthquakes comes not only from violent shaking and violent tsunamis, but also from fires.
Estimates of the expected damage from a major earthquake directly under the capital, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, indicate that about 118,000 buildings could be affected by the fires.
