Amy Hunt clinches European Championships sprint double: Team GB golden girl beats rival Dina Asher-Smith in 200m final

Amy Hunt claimed a European Championships sprint double after beating rival Dina Asher-Smith in the women’s 200 metres in Birmingham.

Hunt, who claimed gold in the 100 metres on Monday, stormed to victory in a time of 22.19.

The 24-year-old star is now halfway to her target of winning quadruple gold at the championships, with Hunt signalling two of four to the camera post-race.

Asher-Smith had started the fastest of the finalists but was chased down by Hunt, who edged ahead heading into the closing stages.

Hunt held off her rival’s challenge to claim gold, while Asher-Smith was eventually pipped for silver by Ireland’s Rhasidat Adeleke.

‘Two out of four baby,’ Hunt told the BBC post-race.

‘The 100m is harder mentally and 200m is the hardest physically. I have had a lot of health things going on this year. It meant the 200 has been scary, nearly fainting after a lot of my 200m this year.

‘I am thinking of my coach, I am just thinking of him and not making the mistake of getting caught up in other people’s battles. 

‘This is becoming a magical week and one I will remember for the rest of my life.

‘No celebrations and no champagne until Sunday night. I have got a debt to the ladies. 

‘We have got to come out here and make sure we show them who the best sprinting nation is in Europe.’
