California bar sparks outrage after publicly shaming customers over tip: ‘This is a totally new level of entitlement’

A California bar has sparked outrage after publicly shaming customers over their tip amount.

The Salty Dawg Tavern, based in Orange, appeared to take to its Instagram Story over the weekend to air grievances with its 12,600 followers.

It reportedly shared an image of a receipt that added up to $375.24 before the customer added a $20 tip – much to the tavern’s disappointment.

In overlaid text, it supposedly wrote: ‘To the four young people served for hours. Spent $400 like a baller and tipped like they were splitting a happy meal.’

But when a screenshot was shared to Reddit, furious viewers called for patrons to ‘boycott’ the establishment over its ‘entitled’ attitude.

‘Ridiculous that the business posted this and should be happy people are spending money at their establishment.

‘If you can’t pay your employees enough you should shut the doors!’ one wrote.

‘Imagine being angry someone patronizes your business in the amount of hundreds of dollars,’ another added.

‘This is totally new level of entitlement to post it on social media,’ someone else penned, before another added in part: ‘What a dumb thing for a business to say.’

The Story was reportedly removed a few hours later but several other screenshots were shared to The Salty Dawg Tavern’s Facebook page.

Negative reviews flooded in with social media users claiming they ‘would not recommend.’

Typing out their complaints, one wrote: ‘Really gross to post someone’s receipt mocking them after spending $400.’

‘Ungrateful business complaining about no tips. Maybe if you paid employees you wouldn’t need to whine,’ another shared.

‘I would never spend money at any establishment who publicly shames their customers for spending their money for your overpriced garbage,’ someone else wrote.

The Daily Mail has reached out to The Salty Dawg Tavern for comment.

Earlier this year, a nationwide survey found that 78 percent of Americans believe tipping culture has become ‘ridiculous.’

Nearly half also said they have actively cut back on gratuities in 2026 as household budgets come under increasing pressure.

The findings, from restaurant technology company Popmenu, suggest a growing backlash against what many consumers see as relentless requests for extra money on top of already rising prices.

Retail analyst Neil Saunders spoke to the Daily Mail about the findings in June.

He said that consumers are increasingly frustrated by both the size of expected tips and the growing number of situations in which they are asked to leave them.
