Car thief finds baby sleeping in back seat during brazen daylight robbery… but what he did next has truly enraged Aussies
A manhunt is underway to track down a brazen thief who stole a car with a sleeping baby inside in Victoria’s north.
The man got into a red Volkswagen in a supermarket carpark on Maude Street in Shepparton shortly before 2pm last Friday.
He began reversing out of the car park and then realised that a 15-month-old was sleeping in the back seat.
CCTV captured the man taking the child out of the car and running to the other side of the carpark to place the child inside a cardboard box.
He ran back to the Volkwagen and sped away.
The car owner returned from the supermarket and located the abandoned toddler before raising the alarm.
The stolen car was found the next day 5km away in Mooroopna.
Police have released CCTV and images of a man they believe can assist with their inquiries.

He’s described as 165cm tall, a slim build and aged in his 20s or 30s.
He was wearing a blue Golden State basketball singlet, a black cap worn backwards, navy headphones, black shorts, light blue joggers and black sweatbands on both wrists.

The CCTV has both divided and enraged Aussies.
While some slammed the owner for leaving the baby inside the car while ducking to the supermarket, others were stunned by the thief’s decision to dump the baby in the carpark.
‘Give him 15 years,’ one wrote.
But one wrote: ‘At least he didn’t drive away with the baby, which has happened.’
