So the Beach Read movie has barely started filming and BookTok is already eating it alive.
Director Yulin Kuang posted a behind‑the‑scenes camera test of Phoebe Dynevor and Patrick Schwarzenegger with the caption, “a crumb of bts from the Beach Read camera test for you, dear reader 🐥 can’t wait to show what we’ve been cooking up ⏲️👩🍳”, and the comments instantly turned nuclear.
Here’s everything we know about Beach Read so far.
What is Beach Read about?
Emily Henry’s Beach Read follows January Andrews, a romance author whose life falls apart so thoroughly she ends up hiding out in her late dad’s secret Michigan lake house… only to discover her grumpy college rival, literary author Augustus “Gus” Everett, is living next door.
Both of them are creatively blocked and generally a bit cooked, so they make a deal: he’ll try to write something happy for once, she’ll attempt a big “serious” novel, and they’ll drag each other on research outings — his involving cult interviews, hers involving aggressively romantic dates.
Somewhere between bonfires, trauma unpacking and mutual pining, they fall in love, giving us rivals‑to‑lovers, grief, and “I don’t believe in happy endings but I want you to have one” all in one hit.
It’s genius.
Who is cast in Beach Read?
Phoebe Dynevor is playing January Andrews, with Patrick Schwarzenegger as Gus Everett in the 20th Century Studios adaptation.
Dynevor’s casting went down pretty smoothly, but Schwarzenegger’s announcement in April had fans immediately divided, with Deadline calling him a “dark horse candidate and an unexpected choice”.
When he confirmed the role on Instagram, he wrote, “I’m so excited for this!!!” and thanked Emily Henry “for the opportunity,” promising, “I will do everything possible to make the fans happy and proud and bring your brilliant writing to life,” and later added, “I can’t wait to bring these characters to life with you. It was a pleasure working opposite you through these chemistry reads,” tagging Dynevor.

The comments went nuclear almost immediately. One person told him, “Break a leg!! (Literally) (drop the role) (quit) (decline),” another said, “I don’t even mean this in a rude way but pls don’t do this,” and someone else wrote, “Ruined my favourite book.” Others were weirdly thrilled, with fans yelling “CONGRATS KING, YOURE GOING TO CRUSH IT!!!!” and “Big win for the girls (i’m the girls),” plus Taylor Lautner dropping in with a simple “I LIKE THIS”.
Behind the scenes, Yulin Kuang is directing after co‑writing the People We Meet on Vacation adaptation, and she’s been pretty open about how Patrick ended up as Gus.
On social media, she said, “‘Patrick is a slow burn’, is what I wrote in my notes after meeting him for the first time”, and explained they “saw a lot of men for this role” but that she’s “always maintained that we are not casting a character, but a relationship”.
“The moment Patrick sat across from [Dynevor], there was something electric in the room with us,” she added.
“‘There’s magic to chase here,’ I wrote in my notes afterwards”, and remembered Dynevor saying, “It’s obviously Patrick, isn’t it?”

What is the drama around Beach Read?
The latest flare‑up is all about that camera‑test “crumb”. Kuang’s new Instagram pic of Dynevor and Schwarzenegger in character was meant to celebrate filming officially starting, but fans flooded the comments with critiques about styling and whether Schwarzenegger still isn’t their Gus Everett.

See some of the reactions here:

This all sits on top of months of backlash, with some readers arguing he doesn’t match the book’s description or mood and others bringing up his public image and alleged politics.
Emily Henry has also weighed in, gently. Speaking on Today With Jenna and Sheinelle, she said, “I also have to sit back and, like, let it unfold.
“It is our baby, the readers’ and my baby, but it’s almost the filmmakers’ baby and the studio’s baby. I’m along for the ride with the readers, and we just have to trust the vision.”
When is the Beach Read release date?
Beach Read has officially started production under 20th Century Studios, and the film is set for a theatrical release in May 2027. Recent updates peg the date as May 7, 2027, after originally being slotted a week later in the month. Until then, we’re going to be living off casting news, set pics and increasingly chaotic discourse in the comments.
Is there a Beach Read trailer?
There’s no trailer yet — they’ve only just hit the camera‑test and first‑look stage, but enjoy this video of a fan crashing out over the casting instead:
