Commuter chaos as a major Sydney train line is shut down due to emergency repairs

Thousands of Sydneysiders face a nightmare commute to work with train services currently suspended on the north shore.

Urgent repairs on overhead wiring at Chatswood station have halted all city-bound trains on Tuesday morning.

The issue has caused widespread disruptions on the T1 North Shore and Western Line, T9 Northern Line, the Central Coast and Newcastle Lines in both directions.

‘Repair crews are on site and working to restore train services as soon as possible,’ a Sydney Trains alert stated.

‘If you are travelling towards the City you will need to make your own way to the nearest Metro Station or alternatively catch an outbound Hornsby train and interchange at Chatswood for the Metro to complete your journey.’

The repairs are scheduled to be completed by 10am. 

‘Once repairs are done we need to do testing before they re-energise those lines, so quite a process to work through to make sure everything’s safe,’ Sydney Trains chief executive Matt Longland told 2GB.

Limited buses are replacing trains between Gordon and Chatswood in both directions. 

T1 North Shore Line train services from the city are running at a reduced capacity.

‘You may have have to change at Central or North Sydney to continue your journey. You can also consider using Metro to travel between the City and Chatswood,’ Sydney Trains added.

‘Some trains going away from the city will depart from Intercity platforms at Central.’

Commuters are urged to allow extra travel time, listen for announcements, check information screens and transport apps for service updates.

‘You may also consider using local buses or make your own travel arrangements if you are able to do so,’ an alert read.
