Elementary school soccer game turns into bloodbath as teen kills mom-of-seven as she tried to save children in firing line, police say

A soccer game outside a Michigan elementary school turned deadly when a teenager allegedly shot dead a 15-year-old boy and a mother-of-seven, who police say was trying to shield children from the gunfire.

Beloved mom Savanah Rubio, 38, was fatally wounded as she tried to help Jeremiah Cuevas-Griffin, 15, who was also hit with gunfire and died. 

Grand Rapids police say Rafael Martinez-Lopez, 18, faces multiple murder and weapons charges following the shooting on Tuesday evening outside Southwest Elementary School in Grand Rapids.

The violence erupted around 6:30pm after Martinez-Lopez approached children playing soccer and asked to join the game. 

When he or his younger brother was turned away, police say, a confrontation escalated into gunfire that left the mom-of-seven and teen boy dead.

Cops say Martinez-Lopez also tried to shoot another child, but the weapon failed to fire.

The shocking bloodshed has devastated the western Michigan community, forcing two nearby schools to temporarily close as grieving families struggle to comprehend how an ordinary evening soccer game turned so deadly.

On Friday, Martinez-Lopez appeared in court, where he acknowledged the murder and weapons charges against him before a judge ordered him held without bond.

Grand Rapids police said the teen suspect faces two counts of open murder, multiple felony firearm charges and additional weapons offenses.

Interim Police Chief Joe Trigg described the attack as a horrifying act of senseless violence that deeply affected even veteran officers.

‘We have care and concern for all victims, but this kind of senseless violence just hits differently, even for long-serving officers like myself,’ Trigg said in a statement. ‘We are grieving alongside their loved ones and our community.’

He praised responding officers for rendering aid, securing the scene and apprehending the suspect ‘without further violence.’

Family members said Rubio died exactly as she lived – trying to protect others.

‘She guarded Jeremiah in her last moment,’ family friend Alana Crooks told News 8. ‘She played her role exactly as she was supposed to as a mother and a guardian.’

‘Savanah and Jeremiah should not be dead right now,’ Crooks added. ‘They shouldn’t.’

A GoFundMe page was set up to help pay for the teenager’s funeral. 

Rubio, also known as Savanah Villarreal, leaves behind seven children along with a devastated husband now facing life without her.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to aide her kids aged 17, 15, 13, nine, eight, seven and three.

Friends described her as a woman who was constantly helping struggling families and lifting up others in the community despite hardships of her own.

Crooks said Rubio became deeply involved with her nonprofit ministry, The Salty Mama: It Takes A Village, which distributes groceries and household supplies to families in need.

According to Crooks, Rubio was among the ministry’s very first families to receive assistance and later became one of its biggest supporters and advocates.

‘She would sign up and she would benefit from that. Her and her family would,’ Crooks said tearfully. ‘Once I made the Facebook page to make it more official, she followed, she supported.’

Crooks said Rubio tirelessly connected struggling families with resources and support.

‘They say like everybody’s within six degrees of each other,’ she said. ‘It’s like she was that person that connected all of us.’

Even amid overwhelming grief, Crooks said she also mourned the destruction caused by the alleged shooter’s actions.

‘My first feeling, once I was told, was I felt like three people died that night because I believe that that young man threw his life away by taking two lives,’ she said.

Jeremiah’s family described the teenager as deeply kindhearted, faithful and committed to helping others.

His mother, Mildred Griffin, said her son had become increasingly devoted to church and youth programs in recent months.

‘Youth group every Wednesday, church every Sunday, as a 15-year-old young man,’ Griffin said.

‘Somebody stole from me, and that’s something I can’t get back.’

Griffin said Rubio was far more than simply a family friend.

‘She gave her life to save my son,’ Griffin said. ‘He considered Savanah his auntie.’

Neighbors and community members have been left stunned that such a trivial dispute could end in catastrophic violence.

According to police filings, Martinez-Lopez allegedly attempted to fire at another child after shooting Jeremiah and Rubio, but the gun malfunctioned.

Authorities say the suspect fled after the shooting but was later found at a nearby home and arrested.

His attorney, Craig Jenison, said Martinez-Lopez had no prior criminal record.
