High school football coach suffers ‘cardiac emergency’ on sideline and is revived by cops… before pumping fists to crowd

Terrifying scenes unfolded at a high school football playoff game on Friday night, after a coach appeared to suffer a serious cardiac emergency on the sideline.

Greg Schoon, a former player himself for Iowa State, was coaching Ankeny High School’s defensive line when he suffered what was reported to be a heart attack in the fourth quarter of the game.

As detailed by Times of Ankeny sports editor Chris Meglio, the game was immediately paused as law enforcement and the school’s own medical staff rushed to Schoon’s aid.

CPR was performed and a defibrillator was used on the coach, who was finally brought back to consciousness after around five minutes of emergency treatment.

It was later reported that Ankeny police officers Ted Townsend and Walter Reed were the heroic first-responders that saved Schoon’s life.

In a remarkable moment that left the crowd roaring, the coach was somehow able to pump his fists to the crowd as he was being loaded into an ambulance and taken to a nearby hospital.

After the players had regained their composure, the game continued and Ankeny High School went on to beat Iowa City Liberty in the Class 5A Semifinal match-up.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Ankeny High School for a further update on Schoon’s condition as he continues his recovery in the hospital.

After the game, quarterback Mason Machan spoke to Meglio about Schoon, noting: ‘He’s an amazing man. He’s a great dude, and I was very happy to see him get up.

‘I had something like that happen with my dad a couple of years ago and it’s scary to see that happen, so I’m very very happy for him and happy for this team to see him get up.’
