Melbourne mayhem as raging shirtless man goes on carjacking spree – before hero tradie steps in

Brave tradies have stopped a shirtless man who allegedly went on a rampage, smashing into cars and trying to carjack two others in Melbourne.

The 50-year-old man allegedly crashed into four cars during peak-hour traffic at 5.30pm on Monday along Auburn Road in Hawthorn in his out-of-control Jeep.

With his car wrecked, along with four others, he tried to flee the scene by allegedly carjacking two drivers.

As he tried to take the first car, he allegedly assaulted a man after trying to take his keys before turning his attention to a woman whom he tried to pull out of her car.

Witness George Allen told Nine News it was a confronting scene.

‘When I saw him reach into this poor lady’s car, I was like, well someone’s got to stop him,’ Mr Allen said.

‘He was obviously trying to grab her keys or open her door. I could hear him yelling abuse at her, and her yelling something back.’

Before the shirtless man could do any more damage, a few locals took him to the ground and performed their own citizen’s arrest in the middle of the street.

Mr Allen said police arrived a short time later to take over.

‘They came over and got into a slight fist fight and then pinned him down and held him until the police came,’ Mr Allen said.

‘One of the tradies who was obviously in a ute grabbed a rope and tied him up.’

Mr Allen praised the four men for acting quickly to defuse the situation, noting they leapt into action knowing how risky it could have been given how ruthless the alleged carjacker was.

‘I know lots of people are worried these days about confronting people in situations like that. They might be worried about getting attacked themselves or the guy might have had a weapon, so I was impressed that there were people willing to stand up to him,’ Mr Allen said.

Police took the man, from Capel Sound on the Mornington Peninsula, to hospital under guard before charging him with attempted carjacking, attempted robbery and reckless conduct endangering life.

He was remanded in custody to reappear in court next week.
