Millions of Cuisinart barbecue utensils recalled after people swallow metal brushes

Millions of Cuisinart barbecue utensils have been recalled after several customers ingested their metal brushes.

​The warning follows a previous recall in July 2026, which affected 1.7 million products. Now, more than 3.6 million Metal Wire Bristle Grill Brushes are subject to the warning.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said that the utensils’ bristles can become detached and stick to a grill or to food. That could lead to customers swallowing the brushes, something that could cause “serious internal injuries that could require surgery.”

​“Consumers should stop using the recalled grill brushes immediately,” the warning reads.

​The CPSC says that Conair, Cuisinart’s parent company, is aware of at least 54 reports of the wires becoming detached. At least three of those reports involved customers who swallowed the bristles and sought out medical care to have them removed from their throat or digestive tract.

​Around 1,905,805 were included in the CPSC’s August warning, in addition to the 1,719,995 included in the July recall. That brings the total number to around 3,625,800.

​The products were sold nationwide at retailers including TJ Maxx, Burlington, Walmart, Amazon and Cuisinart itself. The products were sold from June 2009 until March 2026 for prices ranging between $8 and $20.

​The CPSC says that consumers can contact Conair for a full refund. Alternatively, those seeking a refund can request credit for use at Cuisinart worth the full price in addition to 20 percent of the cash refund amount.

​“Consumers will be asked to discard the recalled grill brushes,” the CPSC says.

“Cuisinart takes consumer safety and well-being extremely seriously and we are committed to making high-quality, safe products,” a spokesperson for Cuisinart told The Independent. “We have worked closely with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to voluntarily recall certain Cuisinart metal wire bristle grill brushes in the U.S., and to make sure consumers are informed and discontinue use of these products.

The spokesperson added, “If consumers believe they have an impacted product, we encourage them to discontinue use immediately.”

A number of other companies have recalled similar utensils earlier this year, with the CPSC announcing that Nexgrill had recalled about 10.2 million brushes and that Weber had recalled around 3.2 million.

​Minnesota mom Amie Walden told People earlier this year that her son had to undergo surgery after ingesting a metal grill brush bristle at a Memorial Day barbecue. She did not state the product’s brand name.

​Walden said that the bristle was found in her son Noah’s intestines, with doctors removing three inches of his bowel.

“It’s a life-changing surgery in the sense of now you always have your bowel reconnected, and you can get scar tissue, and you can have complications from it,” she said.
