Raytheon awarded $22.9 billion ‘landmark’ contract to boost Tomahawk output for US Navy
In an effort to replenish shrinking stockpiles of advanced weapons, the U.S. military announced on Monday a $22.9 billion contract with Raytheon, an RTX unit, aimed at significantly expanding Tomahawk missile manufacturing.
Worry over inventories of precision-guided arms and air defenses has grown as the U.S. continues supplying substantial military aid to allies and expending munitions during the conflict with Iran.
“We called on industry to rapidly scale up munitions output, and RTX is delivering,” Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao posted on X.
“This landmark Tomahawk contract ensures our warfighters continue to have the lethal firepower they need.”
Raytheon noted in a separate statement that the seven-year deal will boost annual Tomahawk output to over 1,000 missiles, up from its present rate of 60 per year.
Launched from ships and submarines, the Tomahawk serves as a vital component of the Navy’s surface fleet, delivering long-range precision strikes against targets on land.
Monday’s official announcement completes a preliminary framework agreement reached by Raytheon and the U.S. military in February.
To encourage major domestic defense contractors to invest billions in expanded equipment and new infrastructure, the administration of President Donald Trump has been arranging multi-year agreements.
This follows additional contracts signed by the military earlier this month to accelerate the manufacturing of parts for Patriot and THAAD interceptor missiles.
