Millions of Aussies will enjoy higher temperatures this week, with one major city possibly recording its warmest start to spring in more than 50 years.
A large high pressure system that passed over southern Australia on the weekend caused a hot air mass to build up over the country’s interior and northwest, which will sweep across much of the nation in the coming days.
Sydney could see its hottest start to spring in more than than half a century, with no rain forecast for the next seven days.
The Harbour City is tipped to reach a top of 24C to 27C for the first three days of spring – 4C to 7C above average for this time of year.
The last time Sydney reached 24C or above on the first three days of spring was in 1969.
The mercury will rise even higher to 29C on Saturday and soar into the 30s in the city’s west.
‘If the city’s temperature manages to climb above 24.8C between Tuesday and Thursday, it will be the city’s warmest start to spring in 161 years,’ Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said.
Melbourne, Adelaide, and Hobart are all forecast to record above-average temperatures on Tuesday.

Canberra is expected to hit 21C on Wednesday – a five-year season high – while maximum temperatures will surge past 30C in Brisbane later in the week.
Computer modelling predicts that most areas of Australia, outside the tropics, will record above-average maximum temperatures in September.
Large swathes of the nation are also expected to be drier than usual.
‘This does not mean it won’t rain at all, but many areas of Australia could be drier than they usually would for the first month of spring,’ Mr Domensino said.
Australia’s alpine regions have had one of their worst snow seasons on record due to above-average temperatures.
Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra all experienced their warmest winters on record, while Adelaide and Hobart experienced their second-warmest.
Sydney registered 186.2 mm of rain in winter, well below the seasonal average of 311mm.
‘Sydney’s running mean seasonal temperature for this winter stood at 15.27C – around 2.25C above the long-term winter average and on track to beat the previous record of 14.95C set in 2013,’ Mr Domensino said.

‘Another factor that contributed to the warmth in Sydney this winter was an absence of East Coast lows.
‘These systems, which are most likely to occur in winter, typically cause several days of cloud and rain over eastern NSW, which suppress maximum temperatures. Without any East Coast lows, Sydney has had more relatively warm days.’
