UNESCO recognizes Arabic calligraphy as an intangible heritage

The newspaper “Al-Fun” reported that new treasures of world culture have been added to the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List.

This year, 43 new items have been added to the list. The newspaper highlights Arabic calligraphy, the Congolese rumba dance, and the pottery of the Avagon people of northern Peru.

“Arabic calligraphy has always emphasized the importance of unique forms of creative expression in a single culture, but now, having passed this test across cultures, it is confirming the universality of Islamic art.”

16 Arabic-speaking countries have organized a campaign to promote recognition of Arabic calligraphy as a World Heritage Site.
