British scientist: “Earth is on the verge of a sixth wave of mass extinction”

Stanford University professor Paul Ehrlich, in a conversation with the Daily Mail, warned that Earth is on the verge of a sixth wave of mass extinction.

“Mass extinction is just one of the interconnected existential threats to civilization, others include climate disruption, global poisoning and the resumption of the nuclear arms race,” the professor said.

He said floods, droughts and wildfires caused by climate change could wreak havoc on the planet like a massive volcanic eruption or a giant asteroid.

Ehrlich noted that there is debate about the causes of the previous five mass extinctions, and there is not a single word in the scientific community about the cause of the ongoing sixth extinction. “There are a lot of people, they are consuming a lot, and this is exacerbated by inequality between gender, race and economy,” he concluded.

The World Wildlife Fund has indicated that in the next ten years, the Earth may face the largest extinction of animals since the extinction of the dinosaurs.
According to experts, African elephants, polar bears, some sharks, frogs and fish are endangered. In 31 years, the African forest elephant population has declined by 86%, while polar bears are under threat due to melting Arctic ice.

The number of sharks has been affected by overfishing and the destruction of natural resources.
