Turkey blocks the voice of America, Deutsche Welle and Euronews

The Turkish Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) said VOA, Deutsche Welle and Euronews will be banned due to the lack of a broadcasting license.

According to RTÜK spokesperson Ilhan Tashi, in order to prevent blocking, TV channels must apply for a license within 72 hours.

In 2019, Turkey passed a law requiring major broadcasters to obtain a license in the country, open an office, and pay taxes. The rules apply to media companies that broadcast online, including Netflix.

The US State Department responded by calling on Turkey to “respect and protect press freedom” and raising concerns about press freedom in Turkey.
