Developing a treatment for HIV

The head of the Scientific Center for AIDS Prevention and Control at the Central Institute of Epidemiology, Vadim Pokrovsky, said that scientists at the institute are developing a method for treating HIV infection by cutting out sections of the genome into which the virus has fused, and there are already some successes.

The Central Research Institute of Epidemiology uses a slightly different approach, which is also referred to as gene therapy methods. This excludes, using special technology, the parts of the genome into which the virus has integrated.

“Our research is going in that direction, and some successes have already been achieved,” the academic said.

He stressed that many countries today are developing their own methodology, in which cells of an infected person are transfected and transformed into cells that are immune to HIV. After that, they are returned to the body, eventually replacing the susceptible.
