Greece buys French frigates “Belhara” for 2.53 billion

The Greek government has approved a deal to buy three French Belharra-class frigates for the Greek Navy for a total amount of 2.53 billion dollars.

According to the island, within four years Greece will receive three such ships, and within a year the orders will increase to four frigates and four corvettes.

It is noteworthy that the modernization of the Greek fleet is taking place against the backdrop of tense relations with Turkey due to the disputed territorial waters. In 2021, Turkish warships breached the country’s water borders 2,085 times, and planes breached air borders 2,459 times, according to Sofia Sakurava, a parliamentarian from the opposition Syriza party, who also supported the ship purchase.

Speaking in Parliament, where the issue of approval of the deal was discussed, she said, a “border” of Turkish activity in the Aegean is being established between the Greek islands.
