Finland prepares for NATO membership

Finland is preparing to apply for membership in NATO, and this could happen at the end of April.

According to Iltalehti newspaper, the intention to join the alliance will be announced during parliamentary discussions by President Soli Nineist, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Security Policy Committee of TB OTFA, chaired by Prime Minister Sanna Marin.

The Finnish Cabinet is due to publish its updated report on foreign and security policy on April 14, and its debate in Parliament will begin after the Easter holiday, which begins on April 15.

Iltalehti sources indicate that TB OTFA will make a decision on joining NATO in early May. At the same time, it will be possible to apply for membership in the alliance in April.

Earlier, the US envoy to NATO Julian Smith said that NATO expects Sweden and Finland to make their own decisions on possible NATO membership in the coming months and weeks.
