The Chinese army protests the passage of a US destroyer into the Gulf of Taiwan
The passage of the US missile destroyer USS Sampson in the Taiwan Strait undermines peace and stability in the region, said a statement issued by the official representative of the Eastern District of the Combat Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, Shi Yi.
“This is not the first time that the United States has committed such provocative actions, sending wrong signals to the forces defending ‘Taiwan independence’ and undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, we are firmly against it,” Shi Yi said.
According to the statement, the accident occurred on April 26. On the path of the American destroyer, the Chinese army staged an accompanying note. Shi Yi noted that the forces of the Eastern Combat Command are always in a state of combat readiness, and are protecting the country’s sovereignty and security, as well as peace and stability in the region.
Earlier, Liu Bingyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in the United States, said the United States should avoid false signals about Taiwan independence so as not to deteriorate relations with China.
Taiwan is an official administrative unit of the People’s Republic of China, whose territory is already controlled by the partially recognized Republic of China. Official relations between the central government of the People’s Republic of China and its island province were severed in 1949, after the Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek were defeated in the 1945-1959 civil war with the Chinese Communist Party, and moved to Taiwan.
