UK and UNICEF launch an initiative "better life" To improve the lives of the most vulnerable women and children in Somalia

The British government announced on Monday the launch of the “Better Life” initiative to improve health and nutrition for pregnant women and young children in Somalia in cooperation with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

British Ambassador to Somalia Mike Nithavrianakis said – according to what The official website of the British government stated: “Better Life” is a pioneering and innovative health and nutrition initiative. Which works to improve the lives of the most vulnerable women and children in Somalia. He expressed his happiness to work with UNICEF and the Federal Government of Somalia.

The British diplomat stressed that it will help reduce deaths due to complications related to pregnancy and childbirth, as well as reduce the infant mortality rate. As a result of malnutrition.

In turn, Wafa Saeed, representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Somalia, said: “Somalia’s efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality are complicated by chronic conflict and climate change, which causes population displacement and the spread of diseases.” She added: “Through this initiative, we will strengthen the health system’s ability to provide life-saving services while giving priority to the most vulnerable groups.” She stressed that UNICEF will strive to ensure that quality support is provided to targeted individuals and Leaving no mother or child behind.

According to the British government, the Better Lives initiative will include partners and like-minded donors supporting health in Somalia, including the World Bank and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, as it aims to Ensuring access to vital healthcare services to 4 million vulnerable Somalis by 2026.

She indicated that the United Kingdom is committed to its Somali counterpart to provide a wide range of humanitarian and development activities following its pledge to provide 38 million pounds sterling in the period from October 2023 to September 2026.
