Bulgaria allows gay children to get citizenship

A court in Bulgaria decided to issue a birth certificate to a child of a gay couple, and the mothers’ lawyer called this decision a milestone for the LGBT community.

Previously according to Euronews, the parents, Kalina Ivanova of Bulgaria and Jane Jones of Gibraltar, were unable to obtain recognition from the Bulgarian authorities of the girl with Bulgarian citizenship.

There was no such precedent in the country, since Sofia does not officially recognize same-sex marriage.

However, last year the European Union Court of Justice ruled that Bulgaria had violated children’s rights by not granting the girl citizenship.
