Egypt begins construction of its first nuclear power plant

On July 20, the Russian state corporation Rosatom began construction of the El Dabaa nuclear power plant in northern Egypt.

“We have started,” said the government institution, in response to the corresponding question from journalists.

The Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA) had announced at the end of last June that it had issued a license to Rosatom to build the first power unit at the El Dabaa nuclear power plant.

ENRRA specialists visited the NPP construction site several times with inspections and “did not find any threats to people, the environment and property”, in connection with which it was decided to issue a license.

The El Dabaa plant will be the first nuclear power plant in Egypt and Rosatom’s first major project in Africa.

$30 billion has been allocated for the construction of the plant, and it will consist of four power units with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts each.

An agreement was signed between the governments of Egypt and Russia on the construction of a nuclear power plant in November 2015 in Cairo.
