Coach hits back as teen puts pressure on Latrell

A defiant South Sydney coach Jason Demetriou says he won’t bow to calls for Latrell Mitchell to be moved from fullback.

And he certainly won’t be replacing Mitchell with talented teenager Jye Gray, who some commentators have suggested could steal the No.1 jumper off the million-dollar star.

The 19-year-old Gray has shot to prominence with a couple of eye-catching performances in the NSW Cup this season.

But the young Queenslander will have to bide his time for a shot at the NRL, despite the Rabbitohs being winless from three games.

“Everybody wants to put Jye Gray in,” Demetriou told media on Thursday.

“He’s had two games in NSW Cup against men. He’s 19 years old.

“I’ve got a duty of care to Jye to make sure that he’s not only ready to play first grade, but he’s ready to hold his position in first grade.

“I’m a big believer in Jye and where he’s going in his career, and I’ll make the decisions based on what’s best for him and the club moving forward to make sure he’s a long-term player for us.
