In 1989, Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner played the Roses (Oliver and Barbara) who seemed to be living the perfect life. But, as it turned out to darkly comic effect, that wasn’t exactly the case in ‘The War of the Roses,’ the film directed by Danny DeVito.

That story, which was adapted from William Adler’s 1981 novel, returns to our screens in a new incarnation. And this time, the protagonists are the British actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman.

With Colman and Cumberbatch on board to produce and take on the lead roles, the new film will be directed by Jay Roach, best known for the ‘Austin Powers’ films, although more recently applauded for politically minded films such as ‘Bombshell’. , ‘Recount’ and ‘Game Change’.

Tony McNamara, who recently wrote ‘Poor Things’ for director Yorgos Lanthimos (and also wrote the director’s ‘The Favorite’, for which Colman won an Oscar for her performance), is on board to adapt the book.

‘The Roses’ is still in development, so it hasn’t yet found a place on Disney’s busy release schedule. And since both Cumberbatch and Colman are in-demand actors, there may be a wait until their availability opens up.
