Kristalina Georgieva re-elected as head of the IMF

Current head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva re-elected for a second term.

Bulgarian citizen Georgieva, who has headed the IMF since 2019, was the only contender. Her candidacy was unanimously approved by the IMF board members. Georgieva’s new five-year term will begin on October 1, 2024.

“In making this decision, the Board commended Ms. Georgieva’s strong and flexible leadership during her tenure as she navigated a series of major global shocks,” the IMF said in a statement.

Among other things, Georgieva led the IMF through the pandemic, approving more than $360 billion in new financing for 97 countries, and easing the debt burden of the poorest countries. Also under her leadership, in 2023 the IMF approved a $15.6 billion aid package for Ukraine – a first for a country at war. notes Financial Times.

Commenting on her re-election, Georgieva said she was “deeply grateful for the trust and support” the council had shown her.
