Guterres urges calm and reduction of the current escalation in the Middle East

New York, April 15 / WAM / Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, stressed that the Middle East and the world cannot afford the outbreak of any other war, reminding the world of the brink of the abyss on which the region stands and of the real danger represented by the outbreak of a comprehensive conflict in the region.
This came during his statement before the emergency meeting held by the UN Security Council yesterday evening, Sunday, New York time, in the presence of representatives of Israel, Iran and Syria, to discuss recent developments between Iran and Israel, stressing during the statement that the time has come to calm tensions and exercise the utmost degree of control. Guterres stressed that the international community bears a shared responsibility to “secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, stop the violence in the West Bank, calm tensions across the Blue Line between Lebanon and Israel, and restore safe navigation at sea.” Red: We have a shared responsibility to work for peace.
He also stressed that regional – and even global – peace and security are being undermined every hour. He said: “Neither the region nor the world can bear more wars.”
