Emmanuel Macron finally gave some details on Monday April 15 on BFMTV/RMC concerning “plans B”, “even plans C” for the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, scheduled for July 26. In the event of a terrorist threat deemed high enough, the opening ceremony could be “limited to Trocadéro”or even at the Stade de France, he said.
Questioned by a mother worried about the safety of spectators, the Head of State nevertheless defended the maintenance of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on the Seine. “We can do it and we will do it”he insisted, insisting in particular on “the means of information and intelligence”for the security of this unprecedented ceremony.
This declaration by Emmanuel Macron almost three months before the opening ceremony comes in a context of distrust and concern among part of the population. According to an Ifop survey dated February, only 55% of French people trust France to organize international events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Questioned on April 3 on France 2, when the Vigipirate plan had just been raised to its highest level, the Minister of Sports, Amélie Oudéa-Castera then assured that“there is no specific terrorist threat today against the Olympic and Paralympic Games”. The terrorist threat is monitored by the authorities “with all necessary vigilance”she declared.
The discretion of the authorities on the emergency plans concerning the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games is, according to the minister, a security imperative. “It’s not because we’re not talking about a plan B that we’re not planning one”she emphasized, arguing that“there is a work of discretion that must be respected on these subjects for there to be effective solutions”.
