"IATA": Global demand for air travel rose 21.5% last February

Geneva, April 15 / WAM / The International Air Transport Association (IATA) confirmed that the total demand for global travel in February 2024 recorded an increase of 21.5%, compared to the same period last year, according to the air travel sector data report in global markets issued today.

The report’s data showed that total capacity, measured in available seats per kilometer, rose by 18.7% year-on-year. The load factor for February also stabilized at 80.6%, recording an increase of 1.9 percentage points compared to February 2023.

The report stated that February 2024 was a leap year, meaning it included one additional day compared to February 2023, which leads to a slight increase in the growth of demand and capacity levels towards positive ranges.

Willie Walsh, Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), said: “February continued the strong start to 2024 with all markets, with the exception of North America, recording significant double-digit growth in passenger traffic. Capacity rose by 16% year-on-year, while load factor stabilized at 74.7%, unchanged from the levels recorded in February 2023, while airlines in the Middle East recorded a 19.7% year-on-year increase in travel demand.

Capacity increased by 19.1% year-on-year, and load factor increased to 80.8%.

The rate of increase of airlines in North America amounted to about 16% on an annual basis in the demand for travel, and capacity increased by 17.6% on an annual basis, while the load factor decreased to 77.7%, while airlines in Latin America recorded an increase of 21% on an annual basis.
