'Disappointing' Olyroos fail to qualify for Olympics

Australia has failed to qualify a men’s team in football for the Olympic Games.

The Olyroos finished the under-23 Asian Cup – which doubles as Olympic qualifiers – with no wins and no goals scored.

They failed to make it out of the group stage, a 0-0 draw against Qatar on Monday morning (AEST) the final nail in their coffin.

It means Australia’s hopes of a football medal in Paris will rest solely on the Matildas.

The Olyroos were criticised for not selecting Adelaide United wonderkid Nestory Irankunda when the squad was announced last month.

It was later revealed the decision was mostly down to Irankunda’s own wishes.

Other young gun players were also made unavailable for selection by their powerful club sides, mostly based in Europe.

Australia headed into Monday’s final group game needing to beat Qatar, and needing Indonesia to lose to Jordan.
