The UN envoy to Syria calls on the Security Council to stop the regional escalation in the Middle East

New York, April 25 / WAM / Geir Pedersen, the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, stressed the need to stop the regional escalation in the Middle East, starting with achieving an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, and working to achieve a ceasefire throughout Syria in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. .
This came during the media intervention that Pedersen gave to the special meeting held by the UN Security Council today, Thursday, on developments in Syria, during which he expressed the United Nations’ deep concern about the “dangerous and escalatory spiral” that the Middle East region is going through.
The envoy warned against ignoring the situation in Syria and the efforts required to contain it, and considered that the conflict in Syria is not a frozen conflict, and its effects are not limited to Syria only.
He also touched on the economic situation in Syria, explaining that it is still fraught with risks after the exchange rate of the lira reached 15,000 against the dollar, after the price of the dollar at the beginning of 2020 was about a thousand Syrian pounds, while its price before the start of the conflict in 2011 was about 50 pounds. Syrian.
The Special Envoy revealed that more Syrians continue to attempt to leave Syria and neighboring countries and are risking their lives on risky roads to do so.
He also pointed out the disproportionate burden that neighboring countries hosting Syrian refugees continue to bear in light of the current political, economic and social pressures.
