First look at James Gunn’s Superman in costume

Given the intense scrutiny of James Gunn’s new ‘Superman’ movie, which, if not already burdened enough by having to release the latest version of the DC superhero frontman, also has to cinematically advance the filmmaker’s vision for the DC’s overall film and television universe – it’s no surprise that he chose to get ahead of those who wanted to take a paparazzi photo of breakout star David Corenswet in his Superman suit.
In a fun twist on the usual super intro, the shot appears to show Corenswet’s Clark Kent calmly putting on one of his suit’s boots instead of the standard first look at action. And that’s despite a giant threat seemingly outside the window looming over Metropolis. But we’ll say this: Corenswet certainly looks good, although some fans are certainly drawing comparisons to Henry Cavill’s ‘Man of Steel’ look.
Filming on the movie has been underway for a couple of months now, with production taking place in Norway for some location work on Fortress of Solitude and its home base in Atlanta.

What is the story of ‘Superman’?

Little is really known about the plot at this point, but Gunn has made it clear that he’s eschewing the usual Krypton home planet explosion/Smallville arrival origin story (although those will likely be referenced) in favor of a movie more about the workplace with Clark showing up to work at the Planet, where Lois will already be an established reporting star.
Peter Safran, Gunn’s co-head of DC Studios (and producer of the film) had this to say about the new film during the duo’s big announcement about future DC movies and series:
“It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks kindness is old-fashioned.”

Alongside Corenswet as Clark Kent/Supes, Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois.
Also in the cast? Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardener), Isabela Mercad (Hawkgirl), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Terence Rosemore (Otis), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher) and María Gabriela de Faría (Angela Spica/The Engineer).
That is the main set; we can expect an appearance from Gunn’s brother Sean (a regular in his films, who played characters like Kraglin and provided the go-to performance on set and voice for Rocket Raccoon in the ‘Guardians’ franchise) as the villain Maxwell Lord .
And finally, Milly Alcock will likely have a cameo as Kara/Supergirl, Superman’s cousin, before her film debut.
When will ‘Superman’ hit theaters?
Gunn’s ‘Superman’ is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
