
Police have responded to reports of an active shooter on the campus of the University of South Carolina.
A shelter in place order was issued to students as police investigated the potential active shooter.
According to Carolina Alert, the threat was within the Thomas Cooper Library on the Columbia campus.
The suspect was described as a white male wearing black pants, and approximately 6 feet tall.
‘Evacuate the area or seek safe shelter and barricade yourself. Defend yourself if you encounter the suspect,’ the alert read.
But by 7.10pm, a second Carolina Alert was issued stating there was no evidence of an active shooter, and that police were still investigating.
The initial alert sparked mass panic on campus as students ran to safety.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson expressed concern on X, writing: ‘Praying for the entire USC community as law enforcement responds to reports of an active shooter on campus.
‘Please avoid the area, follow official instructions, and stay safe.’
