WNBA star Paige Bueckers makes desperate plea for stricter gun laws after latest Minnesota shooting

WNBA superstar Paige Bueckers has urged the authorities to impose stricter gun laws after two children were killed in mass shooting in Minnesota.

Armed with a rifle, shotgun and pistol, 23-year-old Robin Westman fired through the windows of a Catholic church in Minneapolis, killing two kids – aged eight and 10 – and wounding another 17 people.

Westman aimed dozens of rounds toward kids sitting in the pews during Mass at the Annunciation Catholic School, police said. He then took his own life.

Dallas Wings star Bueckers, the No 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA draft, went to Hopkins High School in Minnesota.

She spoke out about the shooting ahead of the Wings’ game against the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday.

‘I hope there are stricter gun laws put in place so parents don’t have to worry about sending their kids to school, people don’t have to worry about attending church and all these places are safe,’ Bueckers said, per Winsidr.

‘It’s just really unfortunate that gun violence continues to be an issue and there’s really nothing being done about it.

‘I’m hoping and praying that in the future stricter laws are put in place. You need to pray for people going through stuff like that, for the families involved. Pray that people get that sickness, that violence out of them. It’s just very unfortunate.’

Minnesota law requires people to obtain a permit to carry a handgun in public but the weapon does not have to be concealed. According to the NRA, there is no requirement for a permit to buy a rifle or a shotgun.

Bueckers added: ‘I’ve been sending prayers. I grew up a lot in Minneapolis when there’s been tragic events.. and it’s just really unfortunate.’

Westman is a transgender woman whose mother worked at the school where two children were slaughtered.

In a deranged video posted on YouTube, the shooter explained how she was ‘feeling good’ about committing a ‘devastating tragedy’ at Annunciation Catholic School.

Westman also showed a rifle magazine labeled ‘For the children, hahahahahahaha.’  Court records seen by the Daily Mail indicate that Westman had previously been known as Robert, having petitioned to have her name changed in 2019.
