Kelly Clarkson’s closest friends tell me their deep concerns about toy store meltdown… and a ‘terrifying’ question she cannot answer has left everyone whispering about what is really going on: ROB SHUTER

I never thought I’d see the day when Kelly Clarkson, one of the nicest women in show business, would be accused of behaving like an entitled Hollywood diva.

But here we are.

America’s sweetheart has found herself at the center of an extraordinary feud with a small Brooklyn boutique over a $15,000 mechanical bird this week. The controversy erupted after Clarkson visited Art of Play, a Brooklyn shop featuring an animatronic bird named Molly that she wanted to purchase.

The store insisted Molly wasn’t for sale. Clarkson allegedly disputed that explanation, pointed to a price tag on the wall and accused the business of lying.

It could have ended there. An ugly incident, for sure, but no one would have ever had to know about it.

Then, Clarkson went public on social media. She claimed she was made to feel as though she couldn’t afford it the children’s toy and complained about her treatment. The story exploded across the internet.

Adam Rubin, an owner of the shop, said he thought Clarkson was offended because the clerk did not recognize her. He called her behavior a ‘gross abuse of power,’ ‘completely reprehensible’ and accused her of throwing a proverbial ‘Molotov cocktail into our shop.’

As much as I adore Clarkson, like her many millions of fans, I agreed with Rubin. And I was left to wonder: What caused Clarkson to snap?

Now, friends and business associates of hers tell me something much bigger is happening. ‘Kelly has lost her sense of who she is,’ a longtime media insider who has become a close friend of Clarkson’s tell me. ‘She’s spent so long making everyone else happy that she’s forgotten how to make herself happy.’

Clarkson was just 20 when she won American Idol in 2002. Overnight an unknown young woman from Texas became a superstar. Then came the hit records, Grammy Awards, battles with music executive Clive Davis and relentless pressure to keep delivering.

Her marriage to Brandon Blackstock ended in a bitter divorce. His death in 2025 brought another complicated chapter of grief, particularly for their two children.

Now, with her daytime talk show The Kelly Clarkson Show ending (concluding its seven-season run in August) combined with the lukewarm commercial success of her latest album Chemistry, Clarkson faces something she hasn’t experienced in nearly a quarter-century.

An uncertain future.

‘Kelly doesn’t know who she is anymore,’ a friend explains. ‘She’s spent her adult life being what everyone else wants her to be. The singer, the television host, the devoted wife, the perfect mother. Now she’s asking herself a terrifying question: What do I actually want? And she doesn’t have an answer.’

That’s what friends fear is an ‘identity crisis.’

‘When you’ve spent years being the center of the universe, suddenly losing that structure can be unsettling,’ a morning show host who knows Kelly tells me. ‘Kelly is entering a completely new chapter. Even enormously successful stars can struggle when the applause stops being part of their daily routine.’

And would you blame her for being exhausted?

‘This was never really about a store employee. That was just the final straw,’ says a music insider who has worked with Kelly. ‘She’s frustrated about her talk show ending, disappointed by how her latest album performed and tired from years of heartbreak.’

That explanation makes sense to me. I’ve spent decades working with celebrities and I’ve learned something important: When a famous person explodes over something minor, the thing they’re shouting about is rarely the real problem.

But, regardless, Kelly needs to be careful. ‘If Kelly regrets what happened, she should acknowledge it and apologize,’ a top crisis publicist tells me. ‘Being America’s sweetheart isn’t a lifetime entitlement. It’s a reputation earned through how you treat others.’

This fiasco is professionally dangerous for someone whose entire public image has been built around being relatable. Let’s remember who was on the receiving end of Kelly’s confrontation. Not a powerful record executive. Not a television network boss. Not a millionaire Hollywood producer. But a small business owner.

‘Kelly’s greatest asset has never just been her voice. It’s her heart,’ another music industry insider warns. ‘People love her because they believe she’s one of them. If she starts acting like she’s better than them, she risks losing what made her special.’

We don’t know everything that happened during that encounter. But whatever frustration Clarkson felt, being famous doesn’t entitle anyone to special treatment.

‘Kelly doesn’t Google herself or obsess over what people write about her,’ a Clarkson friend explains. ‘I don’t think she understands yet how badly this has come across. But when she realizes people are questioning whether she’s still the person they believed she was, it will devastate her.’

I still believe Kelly Clarkson is fundamentally a good person. But good people can behave badly. And when they do, the answer isn’t to make excuses. It’s to take responsibility.

Kelly is entitled to feel lost, angry and exhausted. She’s not entitled to take those feelings out on somebody else.
