Adelaide rattled as magnitude 4.8 earthquake strikes – with residents reporting shaking homes

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattled South Australia on Tuesday morning, with hundreds of Adelaide residents reporting the tremor.

The quake hit at 7.48am local time, about 172km south of Adelaide and 101km south of Encounter Bay, at a depth of 10km, according to preliminary data.

Almost 800 tremor reports have been recorded with Geoscience Australia, which was felt as far away as Kangaroo Island, Victor Harbor, and on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The Bureau of Meteorology says there is no tsunami threat.

Residents reported rattling windows as their homes  and furniture vibrating from the tremor.

‘The house just started shaking crazily,’ Willunga local Mark told 891 ABC Adelaide.

‘It’s not real stable and vibrates when the washing machine’s spinning but I got up to check that wasn’t on.’

A Glenside resident added: ‘I’m on the third floor of a multi-storey apartment and it just moved from north to south for about four shakes from side to side.’
