Aigle by Setchu is the collaboration giving outdoor wear a tailored upgrade

Technical outdoor clothing is not normally associated with precision and tailoring. But released this week, AIGLE by Setchu is the capsule collection that draws inspiration from where the city meets the wild, suggesting that a garment’s place is never fixed. A cape transforms into a parka, a trench opens, folds and reconfigures itself, and materials prioritise utility and craft in equal measure.

This new capsule collection sees the French outdoor label AIGLE join forces with Satoshi Kuwata, founder of Setchu and winner of the 2023 LVMH Prize, for garments that look at the house’s outdoor heritage through a more considered, architectural lens. Drawing on Kuwata’s own passion for fishing, as well as his fascination with utilitarian clothing, the collection takes familiar elements – protective details, pockets and modular construction – and gives them a distinctly tailored sensibility. Technical fabrics are mixed with matte and structured surfaces, while Polartec elements bring performance into the mix. The silhouettes move between sharp and relaxed, with pieces designed to fold, open and adapt depending on how and where they’re worn. Ribbon-like bows become a recurring detail, wrapping around the sleeves of waterproof parkas and appearing across thigh-high rubber boots in moss green and black.

Across the collection, A-shaped pleats create a recurring graphic language, joined by a signature double stripe and a reworked AIGLE logo incorporating origami details that reference Kuwata’s own visual vocabulary. This symbiotic design is an extension of the two brands with a shared obsession with craft. AIGLE has been making outdoor clothing and its iconic French-made boots since 1853, while Setchu has built its reputation around Kuwata’s innovative approach to construction, combining Japanese influences with a distinctly modern take on tailoring. “As a passionate fishing enthusiast, I am deeply honoured to collaborate with AIGLE,” shares Kuwata. “For me, this experience goes far beyond fashion: it is a way to bring creation and passion closer together.”

The accompanying lookbook brings these ideas into focus, placing the collection between the studio and the water. Models pose against saturated blue backdrops, sit on wooden docks and lean into fishing boats, giving the clothes a world that feels both functional and fashionable. A sculptural trench is paired with thigh-high rubber boots; oversized technical outerwear sits alongside sharply cut tailoring. From the fishing boat to city streets, AIGLE by Setchu refuses to position outdoorwear in one place. Instead, it treats the wardrobe as something fluid, built to shift with its surroundings, and align with the style of the person wearing it.
