Andy Reid offers worrying Patrick Mahomes health update as quarterback races to be ready for Chiefs’ opening game
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been trending toward a miraculous recovery to start Week 1 after a torn ACL. But head coach Andy Reid isn’t ready to make guarantees.
Mahomes tore the ligament in his knee last December, which would normally have kept him out for the first few weeks of the season.
However, his recovery has gone so well that there’s a high likelihood Mahomes will miss no time in the regular season at all.
Still, Reid is erring on the side of caution as the two-time MVP prepares for the upcoming season.
‘He’s doing great,’ Reid said, per the Kansas City Star. ‘We’ll just see. I’m literally taking it day by day.
‘There are no predictions here on anything. But if the doctors and the trainers and everybody that are involved with this give him an OK — and then most of all, if he feels like he can, then we’ll address that when we get there.

If Mahomes is not able to start, it’s likely that Justin Fields (R) will be given the nod
‘But other than that, these other guys are playing quarterback and doing a nice job with it.’
If Mahomes is not ready to go for Week 1, the Chiefs will likely turn to former Jets quarterback Justin Fields, who was acquired by Kansas City as an insurance policy if recovery took too long.
Since arriving, Fields has taken the mantle of backup for the Chiefs and has featured in both of Kansas City’s preseason games.
Meanwhile, Mahomes has yet to see any action in the preseason, giving Reid all the more reason for pause.
There remains one preseason game on the schedule before the Chiefs host the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football.
After Mahomes’ injury, the Chiefs failed to make the playoffs – ending a 10-year streak of making the postseason.
