Assam Rifles jawan killed in ambush near Myanmar border

GUWAHATI: An Assam Rifles havildar was killed and four other personnel injured after a patrol party was ambushed by suspected militants along the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district on Tuesday. The slain havildar was identified as Jangkhokai Kuki.

A police official said the patrolling party of 21 Assam Rifles came under attack by suspected militants in Changlang district. The area shares a border with Myanmar. The incident took place near Nampong Nallah when the Assam Rifles personnel were patrolling the area where border fencing work was underway.

The police official said suspected militants opened fire on the patrol team, killing the NCO on the spot and injuring four others. The injured were shifted to hospital for medical treatment. Police is not ruling out the involvement of militant outfit NSCN-K-YA. The India-Myanmar border in Changlang district is being used as a transit or hideout by several militant outfits.

Assam Rifles DG Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera condemned the incident and condoled the death of the havildar.
