Brave grandmother, 45, beat cancer only to be killed in parking lot of her local store by rampaging gunman

A Missouri woman who had recently beat her battle with cancer was tragically killed when a rampaging gunman opened fire in a parking lot.

Amy Coon, 45, a grandmother who had recently beaten Hodgkin lymphoma, was fatally shot after Allen Price, 27, allegedly opened fire with a rifle in a grocery store parking lot.

The incident unfolded on Memorial Day at a Cosentino’s Price Chopper, when shots erupted shortly before 4.30pm, the Kansas City Star reported.

A second victim, a 16-year-old employee who was retrieving shopping carts for the store, was also struck and wounded.

He has not been identified and remains in intensive care.

Two armed bystanders intervened and detained Price during the shooting, likely preventing further harm, Pleasant Hill Police Chief Tommy Wright said Tuesday, KSHB reported.

Price turned the gun and shot himself in the head, but survived. He has since been in police custody at a local hospital.

The 27-year-old had previously been released on bond in a separate case, where he faced a charge of harassing family members and threatening to shoot them.

Price has been charged with first-degree murder, two counts of assault or attempted assault, and three counts of armed criminal action.

Charging documents obtained by the outlet show police identified the firearm as a Winchester .243-caliber rifle.

Police found three empty shell casings near Price. One was located inside the rifle and 20 more rounds were allegedly discovered on him.

Court documents also noted a concerning past regarding Price’s mental health, and records showing he admitted to having a shotgun at the time of his 2025 arrest.

However, Police Chief Wright does not believe the prior incident is connected to the shooting.

Tributes poured in for the 45-year-old, with family and friends sharing photos and expressing their grief over the tragedy.

‘Amy lived a simple life and found joy in the little things,’ the grandmother’s obituary read.

‘Her best friend and best pup, Levi, made sure she was never alone and later her kitten, French Fry, joined the family.’

Coon had a love for arts and crafts and gardening, the memorial added.

‘Amy was the mother hen to everyone in her life. She cared deeply for her loved ones. Even through her years of cancer treatment, she showed up for her family and was the absolute best Grammy,’ the obituary stated.
