CBS slammed over AI-sponsored sideline report on first NFL Sunday of the year: ‘I wanna puke’
NFL fans were left bewildered on Sunday afternoon after CBS Sports debuted a sideline report sponsored by artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT.
The eyebrow-raising integration occurred during the early slate of Week 1 action, leaving viewers at home questioning the state of modern sports broadcasting.
During the CBS broadcast of the New York Jets’ matchup against the Tennessee Titans, the network tossed down to the field for an injury update.
However, it swiftly drew the ire of fans online after the commentary team introduced the segment as the ‘sideline report presented by ChatGPT.’
Meanwhile, an on-screen graphic displayed on the broadcast featured the OpenAI chatbot’s logo next to the words: ‘ChatGPT Sideline Report.’
The commercial tie-in did not go down well with football fans, who quickly flooded social media to rip into the network over the incident.

Taking to X, one fan wrote: ‘Nah why is ChatGPT presenting my sideline report? I don’t need ai generated sports reporting now.’
Meanwhile, another said: ‘Nah man no way Chat GPT has a sideline sponsorship.’
‘CBS has a ChatGPT sponsored sideline report. What the f*** happened to the game I love,’ another disgruntled fan added.
Other fans offered blunter takes on the matter. ‘I wanna puke,’ one wrote, meanwhile another added: ‘We are cooked.’
The incident comes months after the family of the woman retired NFL player Darron Lee is accused of murdering called for OpenAI to face accountability after the company’s ChatGPT was allegedly used in a failed attempt to conceal the crime.
The 31-year-old Lee faces the death penalty after allegedly killing his girlfriend, 29-year-old Gabriella Perpétuo, in February. A medical examiner listed Perpétuo’s cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries, and the autopsy report listed 12 different injuries, including multiple hematomas, bone fractures and stab wounds.
Prosecutors have accused Lee of asking ChatGPT how to get medical help without calling the police. Furthermore, he asked the artificial intelligence assistant whether a fall could cause bruising to two eyes and ‘two stabby looking wounds,’ according to evidence presented in court.
Prosecutors also claim Lee asked ChatGPT about injuries that would be consistent with someone falling in the shower. Later, police bodycam footage from the scene showed the former first-round draft pick telling an officer that Perpétuo ‘may have slipped and fallen in the shower’ but denied knowing what happened to her.
The Daily Mail has sought comment from OpenAI spokespeople over the matter.
