Crazy Rich Asians Star Constance Wu Says HBO Series Is Looking Promising

Constance Wu, who starred in the box-office smash Crazy Rich Asians, has chimed in on a potential follow-up series and boy, are we all ears.

The Fresh Off The Boat actress appeared on Canada’s ETalk to promote her upcoming film, The Outer Threat, but host Elaine Lui didn’t miss the chance to ask about the upcoming spin-off series to the beloved 2018 rom-com.

Wu revealed that while a show is in the works, with Crazy Rich Asians co-writer Adele Lim attached as showrunner, that doesn’t mean it’ll be hitting our screens anytime soon. “It’s a TV series at HBO, and Adele has written a lot of scripts”, she explained, saying, “there’s a whole storyline, series arc and everything, but it hasn’t been officially greenlit.”

She went on to admit that, even though it’s looking good, she avoids getting audiences’ hopes too high, saying, “I actually have no power to deliver it”.

“Yes, I’m going to do it if it gets greenlit”, she confirmed, “but I’m not a producer on it; I’m just an actor”.

So what does this mean? Well, it means we can hold out hope, but it’s too soon to start planning watch parties.

“Honestly, I don’t really understand that process very much in terms of like greenlighting and studios and all that kind of stuff; I just understand acting.”

But for the fans among you, while we may not know when (or if) this’ll come, according to Constance Wu, we can be confident it’ll be good.

“All signs are very positive, and I feel very good about the storyline and where my character is going.” Heck yes!

What do we know about the Crazy Rich Asians series?

News broke that a series was in development back in 2025, with one-hour drama episodes based on the original book trilogy by Kevin Kwan. These stories would cover Kwan’s other novels, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems, though it’s hard to say whether these are the same scripts that Lim has written.

The film’s original director, John M. Chu, who has since skyrocketed to Wicked fame, has signed on as an executive producer, alongside Lim and Kwan.

There’s even talk of a sequel film, with Warner Bros. beginning development back in 2022 to create a spin-off following the romance between Gemma Chan and Harry Shum Jr.’s characters, the beautiful socialites who take centre stage in Kwan’s second novel.
